Date Available:

Day 1 & 2: 10am - 4pm

Day 3: 10am - 1pm

Weave a contemporary abstract figure to complement your garden.

This two and a half day course will teach you how to create an abstract figure using similar techniques to those employed for making willow obelisks.

Using a support jig, you will learn how to arrange and bind stakes before weaving, and then use two traditional weaves to form a strong woven band at the base of your figure. You will then learn how to continue the weave up the stakes in an open spiral, and how to use this technique to assist with shaping your work.

On day two, you will learn how to make and assemble willow hoops to form the head for your figure. You will explore scale and positioning of the head to convey expression before fixing. You will learn an informal weaving technique to attach the head to your figure.

The morning of day 3 will be finishing off and learning how to take care of your sculpture to ensure that it lasts as long as possible.

A factsheet will be available containing useful tips for sourcing materials, tools and suppliers.

This course is suitable for beginners and anyone who has made willow obelisks in the past and would like to further their skills.

By the end of the course you will have made a contemporary figure approximately 1.35m - 1.5m tall x 45cm wide x 25cm deep. You will be familiar with some adaptable techniques for making useful garden structures and sculpture.

Tools are provided, but if you have a sharp pair of secateurs it would be useful. Please bring an old bath towel or similar for keeping your willow damp during the day. It is advisable to bring an apron or wear old clothes.
