Demystifying Dressmaking & Getting to know your Sewing Machine

Have you ever wanted to make your own clothes but you just don’t know where to start? In the morning we will cover all the basics you need to know and understand before you start sewing. We will cover:

  • Making the best choices when it comes to fabrics and colours to suit you

  • How to take your own measurements

  • Which garments are best for beginners

  • Choosing the best pattern for your shape and style

  • How to read a commercial sewing pattern

  • How to make simple alterations to ensure that all important fit

In the afternoon, we will get out our sewing machines and discover how they work and what all those attachments are for.

We will cover:

  • Threading

  • Inserting a bobbin

  • Stitch length and width - how to adjust and why

  • Using speciality stitches

  • Making your life easier with speciality feet

  • Basic machine maintenance

During the course, you will put your new found knowledge into practice and make a practical pincushion.

By the end of the course, you will have the knowledge and confidence to choose the right patterns and fabrics to begin your dressmaking journey and to continue working with your sewing machine at home.

This course is suitable for beginners or those looking to refresh their knowledge.

You will need:

  • Your own sewing machine

  • The manual, if possible

  • The accessories for the machine including feet

  • Tape measure

  • Pencil and notebook

Materials Fee:

There will be a £5 materials fee, payable in cash to the tutor at the start of the course, to cover the materials used for the pincushion.
