Tutor: Sarah Sedwick

Dates Available:

  • 3 - 5 July 2020 (Fri - Sun)

3 day course: 10am - 4.30pm

Paint looser and more confidently during this three-day workshop with renowned American artist Sarah Sedwick, during her first teaching trip to Europe!

Take a step-by-step approach to alla prima oil painting, building from black and white studies to brilliant colour. Build a beautiful composition with life and movement, get a new perspective on the still life and learn tips for bringing inspiration to your own studio practice.

We’ll also delve into the fundamentals of good design, creating black and white oil studies to plan compositions that work. Emphasis will be placed on working from the general to the specific: big value shapes first, small details later.

Using a split-primary palette as our colour foundation - two reds, two yellows and two blues - we’ll do quick, fun exercises to focus on loosening up your brushwork before creating a finished piece.

There will be time for both whole class demonstrations and individual guidance and tuition. Instruction will be in oils.

Painters of all levels are welcome.

What to bring;

Students will need to bring their own paints, brushes and grounds and some additional painting equipment such us a palette knife, view finder and medium. A full materials list with recommendations will be sent out closer to the course.

Easels, studio equipment and sundries will be provided.

If you wish to use some of our Michael Harding Oil Paints for the duration of the course, we will have some available for you for an additional materials fee of £10.

About Sarah

Sarah Sedwick is a prolific painter of still life, inspired by color combinations and perceptual effects. All are painted from life. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Sarah earned a BFA in Illustration from The Maryland Institute, College of Art in 2001. Based in Oregon, USA, she has been teaching workshops around the USA on alla prima still life and portrait since 2013, and also conducts an online art mentorship program. This is the first time she has taught in Europe. Her teaching philosophy is simple: the more you paint, the more you improve - so removing the blocks that keep us from the canvas is key. Loosen up, let go of perfectionism, and watch the results unfold.
