Traditional Japanese Watercolour Woodblock

Traditional Japanese Watercolour Woodblock

Tutor: Laura Boswell

Dates Available:

  • 9 - 10 March 2020

  • 1 - 2 August 2020

  • 21 - 22 November 2020

2 day course: 10am - 4pm

A two day introduction to authentic Japanese Woodblock printing from design to finished print.

This two day course will introduce you to the Japanese watercolour woodblock method, from your initial design drawing through cutting and finally printing your work. You will learn the Japanese woodblock registration system and, working on a simple print, will use multiple blocks to create a colour print. You’ll discover, during printing, how to make the colour shadings and washes that makes this delicate watercolour method such a subtle and painterly process. There will be a comprehensive fact sheet to take away along with lots of hints and tips to allow you to carry on printing at home. This is a press free method ideal for the home printer.

By the end of the course you will have explored the process of making a Japanese print and will take home finished prints and blocks along with a full factsheet and enough knowledge to begin printing at home.

What to bring: All tools and materials are provided but any sketches or photos that inspire you are welcome. We will work on your designs in class so no need to plan anything in detail. I supply basic watercolours, but you are welcome to bring your own tubes if you want a wider palette.

There will be a additional materials fee which is payable in cash to the tutor at the start of the course. This includes one block of lino, inks and sundries. Additional lino blocks will be available to buy as well. Because of the uncertainty surrounding the UK’s exit from the EU and a potential rise in import tariffs we are unable to give an exact materials cost for the 2020 courses at the moment but it will be in the region of £18. We will confirm the exact amount as soon as we can.

“Thoroughly enjoyed Laura Boswell's workshop on Japanese Woodblock Printing and would not hesitate to recommend any class taught by her. P.S. The whole Claydon experience was delightful and if I lived in the UK, I would definitely be interested in taking more classes.”
