3 day course: 10am - 4pm

A brand new course from Laura Boswell for 2019. This 3 day workshop is a more in depth study of the colour reduction linocut method as used by Laura in her work.

This welcoming and detailed course will take you through the whole process of making full colour linocuts by hand without a press, using the reduction method. You will learn how to turn your ideas into a design drawing appropriate for print and will work on a single piece of lino per image, cutting the block away as you print each layer of colour. There will be a wide range of pre-mixed inks but you will also have the chance to experiment with different inking techniques, including mixing and using bleeds of colour. You will also have the opportunity to try a painterly approach to inking up, blending colours together on the lino during printing. Two lino blocks are provided for the course, but the second one is optional as you wish. You will take home your finished colour prints along with a comprehensive fact sheet and advice for printing at home without a printing press.

This course is suitable for those who have already taken a course with Laura or already have a little experience with linocut. It is not a suitable course for an absolute beginner.

What to bring: All tools and materials are provided but any sketches or photos that inspire you are welcome. You will work on your designs in class so no need to plan anything in detail.  An apron or old clothes are advisable.

There will be a additional materials fee which is payable in cash to the tutor at the start of the course. This includes one block of lino, inks and sundries. Additional lino blocks will be available to buy as well. Because of the uncertainty surrounding the UK’s exit from the EU and a potential rise in import tariffs we are unable to give an exact materials cost for the 2020 courses at the moment but it will be in the region of £20. We will confirm the exact amount as soon as we can.

“Laura's skill as an artist, married with her experience as a teacher and communicator, enabled us all to achieve beyond our expectations.”
